Yes there is a hardware mod that needs to be done to get the TX range up into the 155 range. I believe it is the removal of a transistor. I can only get mine down to 146mhz. I don't know if there are any tricks beyond this. I have both the 424 and 414. Great radios. Pair them with the cimmaron MDC1200 board and you have a Motorola killer.

FT-8800
Anyone using an FT-8800? Just wondering if the cross band feature is worthwhile. I am thinking about buying one and would like some opinions on it before I buy.
