I don't know the correct combination number offhand, but both the MRK and Orion need to have a 512K n/w switchable logic/IF board. I've never tried to hack feature encryption string, nor have I ever heard of it being done..but since I work on Orions and MRK's commerically, it's never came up. I'm on...

The Orion and MRK radio share similar microprocessors. I suspect they are identical, but I have never actually checked. However, yes, you are correct in that the programming for the Orion and the MRK shares a common relationship. In fact, you can easily convert an MRK personality to an Orion one and...

Is it a TK-360 or TK360G? The original TK-360 (4 channel) has a stud type antenna jack, and the TK-360G (16 channel) has the SMA style jack. It's a very common issue for the two screws holding the jack to the chassis to become loose and in some cases the solder joint on the center contact cracks in ...

Well, if you can talk to other portables close by, but you can neither hear nor hit the repeater, it sounds like nothing is coming through the antenna port, and what you're hearing on the portable is the low power stages from the radio. Typically, the radio radiates enough singal, even if the PA is ...

I can't really recall anything specific with the MDX. However, I've seen plenty of mobile radios that have had temperature related issues. All modern MACOM mobiles have an RF hybrid module, either as the final power amplifier or driving a pair of RF transistors. These seem to suffer from intermitten...

Firmware is available only to Kenwood dealers on the Kenwood dealertools website, but you'd have to ask around to see if any Kenwood techs either have a copy of the latest firmware you're looking for or if they could download it for you.

It means somebody wrote the personality in a later version of ProGrammer. If you have version 14, it means the radio was written with version 15 or higher. I know with Orion radios, you can overwrite whatever is in the radio with a new personality written with an earlier verison of Programmer; you j...

Sorry about that...I didn't see the "R" in the model number. Sounds like you figured it out anyway.

Good luck.

830 or 890? The 30 series doesn't have a DB-25 on the back. Detector out would be pin 4 of the 15 pin accessory connector on the 30 series radio. On the 90 series radio, it would be pin 19 on the DB-25 connector.

The reason for trying to run Kenwood software under XP is that I have two service portables that I keep with me on service calls, and a second computer is just yet another thing to lug around (and forget). I've had no problems reading and programming my TK-250 and TK-350. It's definitely easier to f...

Update: I was able to get the emulator to talk to my COM ports (at least on two machines...an XP laptop with a USB to serial convertor and a Win2000 desktop with a 9-pin serial port). (Note: There is a configuration file called DosBox.cfg Under ports, you must edit the serial port information so tha...

I don't believe Kenwood ever made a PDF of this manual. They only started making PDF service manuals available starting with the G-series. You might be able to find a schematic floating about on the 'net, but it doesn't look like the service manual is out there.

To my knowledge, Kenwood never came out with a Windows version for either the TK-730 series or the TK-250 series. The models had been discontinued by the time Kenwood started writing windows software, and as far as I know, they chose not to write a windows version of either (the original TK-760 seri...

No, rewriting with a "blank" personality will not change a radio's tuning. All the tuning functions are done through the tracking data which can only be altered using the maintenance screen. (This assumes you aren't writing new or different flash code to the radio. If you are changing flas...
