Yes, you may be able to condition the batteries. There are many manufacturers of such battery analyzers/battery conditioners. We use the iTech ones, but there are many to choose from. http://www.itecheng.com/BSSLMR.htm Check with your local two-way or ham shop. We have a disposal service and usually...

You can listen to traffic and still have two-tone decode if you set the channel for optional 2-tone signalling, but you set the signalling for the group to "OR." In other words, it will unmute traffic on CG decode, but will also sound a beep tone when it gets a two-tone activation. The &qu...

You can mix an Orion and M7100 in a dual-radio setup. I've had to do it for a customer and it was done with the blessing and assistance of MACOM technical support. The real key is that the Orion must have the latest and last flash code verison (I think it was series 42 flash). I don't think there's ...

I have a used but excellent KCH-4 (PM if interested). I believe a 90 series mounting bracket will fit the head (will have to check sizes). The mic is still available from Kenwood service parts, as are the power cables. The channel upgrade kit is no longer available, but you can use (3) digi-key EEPR...

I've seen the display flash and give the error tone under the following 3 conditions: -The RX synthesizer is out of lock. Are the 3 channels all at one end of the band or the other? Even if the frequencies are within range of the advertised frequency span, the VCO might be out of adjustment and may ...

I haven't had any chance to really play with Open Sky equipment so I'm going to have to guess a bit here. I have worked with EDACS systems before and they have something they call a "SCAT" site (Single Channel Autonomous Trunking). The SCAT site acts as a control channel and working channe...

I think you'll save yourself a lot of headaches. Fortunately, for all the Kenwoods that I've seen go out the door, few ever come back for repair. But, if your luck is anything like mine, you'll get the one lemon. Plus, I don't spend any more on Ebay that I could afford to lose, and if somebody in Ho...

All the pictures and info about the TK-278 indicate that the LCD just reads out "CH1, CH2, CH3" etc. It doesn't look like it has an alphanumeric display. The early versions of the TK-270 and TK-370 (non-G) of the US model had exactly the same readout. (No alpha, only CH1, CH2, etc.) I've f...

Reverse protection diode= D5 on the final amplifier board.

Switched ignition jumper=W101 on the control unit board (top).

Switched ignition pin=Pin 3 of the 15 pin plug (P4) on the back of the radio. Fuse for 3 amps (fuse and holder included in the KCT-18 Ignition Sense Cable).

It does have a reverse-protection diode, but I don't have the manual in front of me so I can't tell you off the top of my head what the markings are. Typically it's a pretty good sized diode sitting across the main power leads where they first enter the radio. The radio may also be configured for sw...

I believe there is a checkbox under Fleetsync-->General 1 that says "interfleet call." Make sure this box is empty and in theory, anyway, it should not allow calls from other fleets. It should prevent the radio from unmuting on a call from a different fleet, and I would think that you woul...

One of the things I like about the Kenwood FPU; they'll tell you that the frequency is out of range, but they'll let you enter it in anyway

I believe they've kept the same adapter for the Jaguar series. I don't have a part number, but I've used the MRK adapter on the Jaguar radio. You have to watch the length of the center pin and make sure it's not too long.
