Not to mention that you can only use type accpeted radios for FRS. They have to be built for that service or can be hybrids what conform to the FRS standards. FRS is limited to .5 watts and the radio cannot have a detachable antenna. So you cannot program your 45 watt Spectra on FRS and be legal.

You do not need to coordinate a repeater in the GMRS service. The rules have changed over the years.

I know this post is old, but the radio will just passes all traffic through and will not sit on tone alert. I do notice that a small . is present on the display. Vertex alert dropping out
Why would a Vertex radio receive a tone sound the alert then not reset? I have also had problems with the radio being set to the page out channel just to have all the traffic being past through in lieu of it being muted until the tones are set off. What could be causing this?

What Kenwood's are field programmable?
I have heard mixed reviews and replies on the programmablilty of Kenwood radios. Which handheld models that are narrowband compliant are field programmable. I am interested in both VHF and UHF. Also what is necessary to make such units field programmable?
