LMR400 will be just fine at under 100 feet.
Hardline won't "get you out" any farther, although it might "hear" a little better in repeater applications.

KPG7D works just fine under XP on my non-serial equipped laptop. Never had a problem after 1-1/2 years.

I have a VHF VX-10 with no receive audio and VERY low transmit power ( about .3 watts on high power setting). The green light comes on when it receives a signal, but no audio. Also, along with the low RF output, there's no transmit audio.
Is there any particular problem area to look at?

Nope. You buy it and that's it. In fact, it probably will cost you about $50 for the software and you'll get that for other radios with it. There's no licensing like the Motorola Nazis have.
