I've had to use a little bit of everything to program the vertex lineup. I still use an IBM Thinkpad 350C for the dinosaurs, a Toshiba Satellite Pro and a new Dell running XP. For my VX-600, the Toshiba running Windows 95, CE39, and the black VPL-1 cable works for me...see this site: http://www.rfwi...

Is the VPL-1 cable white or black? From this site, I understand there's a difference, electrically (albiet, this reaches the limit of my diagnostic skills) Apparently, the white cable (and black-box electronics in the connector) are obsolete. http://www.rfwiz.com/vx-10_InfoDat.htm

I've always used CE14 for programming the VX-10(4X). Had to use an old (ancient) IBM Thinkpad 350C running at 25mHz and good 'ol DOS. Not sure on the exact cable however...just a four segment sub-miniature plug.

vx-920

I picked one up for our department two weeks ago. Had programming issues because I wasn't using XP. That's all set now. Purchased the radio as a demo: Water resistant (for my Plumbers) and loud audio (did I mention they're partially deaf?) So far, he likes it: lighter than a vx-160, and better audio...
