Programming EDACS Radios.

I once heard that every EDACS radio has something called an electronic serial number (ESN) which is transmitted when the radio powers up, similar to a Motorola radio that auto-affiliates. This ESN is not the same as the radio's ID (LID) as I was told, and if the ESN is not valid on the EDACS system, a command is transmitted on the control channel which shuts down your radio.

Is all this true, or is it a fairy tale ?

Is it possible to program an EDACS radio not to login (affiliate) on powerup (or at anytime as long as you don't transmit) so that you could monitor an EDACS system without the system ever "knowing" your radio exists ?

I am still new to the GE RSS but I have not had to use the LID #. I have been using the Edacs 1,2, and 3 and there is a menu that will allow you to program each system with a TX inhibit .
