Looking for some advice. looking to buy either a new vx 920 vhf or a used ht1000 i need the radio to alert to my fd tones and we use ht1000 radios I have heard very good things about the vx 920 i need it to do mdc1200 also. any advice would be great
thanks jeff
vx 920
Forget the HT1000. No longer manufactured, and parts may be an issue down the road. The Vertex is waterproof, lighter and more capable than the HT ever was designed to be. I have the VX-920 configured as follows: VX-927 (4-button version), UHF, w/ VHF rx-board and VMDE-200 encode/decode board. MDC signalling works well (and decodes the signal to display the radio ID). Our company uses both MDC1200 and DTMF ANI formats.
I have a vx-920 in UHF complete with the VDME 200 board. Radio works great decodes mdc and encodes my company's tones. PLus it's submersible so I can carry it on my jet ski and still be in service.
This radio also does wide narrow selectable by channel. With many systems going narrowband it may be a good choice.
I'm not sure if the HT-1000 does narrowband

I would like to make a report from the field. The vx-920 definitely outperforms my HT-1250, and my 1250 outperforms my HT-1000.
This is on the UHF band in NYC. We have lots of intermod and other interference.
This radio is smaller, lighter, the battery lasts longer. I especially like the lithium battery pack. The radio keeps it's charge even after weeks of non use.
I have carried many radios over the years, going back to the MX-300R right on up to the XTS-3500, and for a conventional radio, you get more bang for your buck with the 920 than any big M products.
IMHO
YMMV
