Programming a XV5500V

Post by redbird »

I need to program a dual head VX-5500V. Does the cable connect to one of the heads or to the radio?

Shut one head off with the power button. Connect programming cable to the left side mike connector looking at the trunk unit from the front. Press and hold the first soft key while also pressing the power button. You should get "PC CLONE" in the display.

Sometimes you need to power off both heads, then connect cable as stated, and power up from only one head to read and write.

I know this is an old thread, but I have same setup and cant seem to read/write to the radio. First off, my VX-5500 heads have only one mic connector and it's on the rear, not one on each side. I attach my CT-70/VPL-1 cable combo using the CE-49 SW and do the PF1/Power Up and I do not get the PC Clone screen, just the regular channel info. I try to upload and after a minute get an error message with a list of things to check, eg. com port, cable conn., etc. (all good). I tried all different combos of heads on/off with no luck. My equipment works fine with the VX-4000 single units but not with the VX-5500 dual head (single band) setup. Any suggestions?

Shut off one of the heads. power down the radio. install your programming cable on the left side mike connector on the main radio unit, not the heads.

Then hold the first soft key while powering up the radio. You should then get PC clone.

Sometimes we have had to disconnect one of the heads from the main unit at the main unit.

Programming is not done thru the heads on these radios. The right side connector looking at the radio with the heat sink facing down, and remote cable connectors facing front, actually has no connection with the mainunit once convertewd to remote mount.

hope this helps.

You mean directly on the RF deck?...I didn't see any mic connectors on it. I'll check again.

There are two. One on each side. But when you convert to remote mount, you use the teenie weenie cable from the right side mike jack to the main pc board in the control head, so the right side is basically dead.

You need to use the left side radio chassis mike jack. As I said before, it may actually be easier sometimes to disconnect one control cable, and work only with one head, which ever is most convienient for putting in program mode.

We did have one "well educated" installer who did mount the radios backwards in the mounting bracket, so then you had to remove and flip the radio to get to the left chassis mike jack.

Hope this helps.

Do you use the same (CT-70>VPL-1) cable when going directly to the RF deck?

Same cable. Nice that you can do the VX4000/55000/6000/800/600/900 series radios with it.

You can also upgrade firmware and install the FIF7a board, with the Cimmeron VME100 board for G-Star, or MDC1200 encode.

Just wish it would decode like the VX4200 series mobile.
