Distorted Receive Audio On VX-510L

I have a Vertex VX-510L operating on 46 Mhz frequency, the problem is when I turn the volume up (over 50%) of the volume control it distorts to the point you can't understand it, I tried a new external speaker mic and it acts the same way so I think the speaker is OK in the radio, next I tried replacing the battery thinking excessive current drain may be a problem, no difference. Wonder if anyone has ran into this problem, this is a carrier squelch freq with no ctcss or tones of any kind. Any held is appreciated. Thank you. Fred/W8WAR
