VHF GE MDX Mobile radio - Any Interest

Post by Tom/G, N1VVD »

I figured I would post this out here to see if there was any interest.
My GE MDX has not been hearing to well lately so based on some recommendations, I replaced the first RF transistor so see if that would help it out. Unfortunately, it did not help.
The radio transmits fine, but doesn't receive as well as it should.
I can hear the NOAA weather broadcasts fine, my main HAM repeaters are received on the weak side.
I am pulling it out of the car for now but I was wondering if there was any interest here in people wanting to buy it.
It is a VHF 150 to 170MHz split, but worked well in the HAM bands.
It is a more rare 128 channel radio, remote head, 50 watts.
Let me know if you would be interested in buying the radio, as is.

Deaf MDX

I'll bet you a dozen donuts that the one or more of the T/R diodes are
blown. I've had the EXACT same symptoms on several Spectras and,
obviously not the same radio, but I'm assuming anything new enough not to have a relay has them. Looking forward to donuts.

Donuts anyone........

kk6rg,
I would gladly buy the the donuts, although they might be stale but the time that got from CT to CA... :)

The next thing I was going to try was the switching diodes.
The service manual lists them as PIN diodes and if I look them up they look like the old discreet component diodes.
If I open up the radio and find them, they are surface mount diodes and are very very small......... :(

Thats kind of where I left it. I put my Kenwood HAM radio in the car and pulled the MDX out.
Maybe that will be the next project if I can find the diodes....
Thanks and 73, Tom/G, N1VVD

Of course one could always use discreet (leaded) components, if only to
test. If they fit without danger of shorting I doubt there'd be any problem using them permanently.

And stale donuts can always be dipped in coffee w/o the recipient being any
the wiser....
