Can I use S990 head without having it programmed?

Post by k2xm »

OK, I've got a low band Delta that is currently programmed for
16 channels on the 6 meter ham band. The control head that
is connected to it is a S600 (only 8 channels). I also have the
complete S990 control group (which I got after having the Delta
programmed). The question is this, can I connect the S990 control
group to the radio and use it, even though the control head had
not been programmed. I'd like to be able to access the upper
8 channels on the Delta, but the S600 head only does the first
8 channels.

thanks,
Pete

I believe that you will have to get the Control head programmed since it dose download the frequency info every time it is turned on.

990 head programming

Post by Eric the Barbaric »

Yes and No. The 900 series with factory firmware has to be programmed with the notorious GE suitcase programmer or the Niles programmer. The Niles software has been released for free use (they no longer suppoert the programmer) and if you have an eeprom programmer that will do the Xicor X2816 eeprom that is in the head you can create a binary image (up to 8 modes of 16 channels) that will do it. On the Radtek site

http://www.radtek.sdione.net/

there is a file named s990prog.zip that when burned into the 2764 eprom (UV eraseable) will allow front panel programming of the 990 head.
