Orion with Pyramid Repeater HELP!

Post by FMRob »

Hello all,

I have a low band Orion with a scan head that I am trying to interface a pyramid repater to. I have the factory Pyramid cable, and have made the modifications to the pyramid as per their directions. When I depress the option key to toggle the repeater on/off it doesn't appear to work and I get no red light. I have been up and down the radio programing with no luck. Any tips or tricks on this?

Thanks, Rob

Are you sending your modified keypad file into the radio during the last stage of programming?

You must tell ProGrammer to overwrite the default keypad file with the one that has been modified with the
AUX1 key in it.

I'm in the same boat...can't figure the correct keypad and/or macro programming to save my @$$

I got it work in one config were it came on when the radio powered up and I had to press the RPTEN button on the keypad to shut if off...but I can't even replicate that now.

I do not intend to steer anyone the wrong way... The info below
should be helpful but your mileage may vary......

Pyramid has several Application Notes for the ORION:

#163 http://www.pyramidcomm.com/pdf/an_pdf/AN163.PDF
#165 http://www.pyramidcomm.com/pdf/an_pdf/AN165.PDF
#206 http://www.pyramidcomm.com/pdf/an_pdf/AN206.PDF
#217 http://www.pyramidcomm.com/pdf/an_pdf/AN217.PDF
#232 http://www.pyramidcomm.com/pdf/an_pdf/AN232.PDF

I think the problem everyone is having is getting a "REPEATER ENABLE" button
programmed on the ORION head. On the SCAN type head, I would use the "OPTION"
button for it.

Too many choices on the SYSTEM head. Pick one...

Here are what settings should work when using ProGrammer:

I got mine to work yesterday after I dug up some notes I made years ago and confirmed with Ken's info above about the I/O settings...that's the good news.

The bad news is the volume of the repeated audio varies with the control head volume control. I parsed this from the Orion list...
The history of connecting a vehicular repeater includes at least two interfaces.
The first series used the FDISC line of the radio which had a fixed audio level
going to the repeater. Later when the dual radio application with vehicular
repeater came out (Ohio State Patrol), there was a problem. The cabling system
then used the VOL HIGH. VOL HIGH does not mean the high side of the volume
control like the MASTR II, but means high impedance. VOL HIGH also changes with
the volume control. So with this hook up the volume control of the radio will
change the level of deviation. So to fix that, the radio must be put into the
vehicular repeater mode, which will fix the audio.

You must create a button to turn on the repeater mode or make the other input
(the one not controlling PTT) put the radio in repeater mode. Then, the audio
will not change.
I assigned a button to a macro to enable/disable AUX 2, which is how the VRS is activated. I guess I don't understand the part I bolded as I thought I already did that?
The serial bus on my Orion is working for it's money.
