CI-V Question .."Chat" with ICOM rigs

I would lke to use a STAMP type chip to exchange data with ICOMs rigs (HF Transceivers) to determine the rigs frequency.
I believe the data is serial TTL in/out of the ICOM rigs so there is no need to do any level changes as I can operate the STAMP chip at those levels.
Has anyone "talked" to ICOM radios directly and not via a laptop? If so, what methods/hardware did you use.
