Icom Mod. 2

Post by ken s »

I just got this radio thinking it was a for 2 meter ham use (I thought it was a Mod. 2A) but when tested I found it covers 150 - 159.995. It uses thumbwheels and appears to be simplex only without any tone provision. There is a single switch on the back for high and low power.
Any additional info would be appreciated.

Do you mean an IC2-AT? That should cover 144-148 Mhz unless it's been modified.

Below is the 150-160 Mod.

Icom IC-2AT (IC 2 AT IC2AT) Coverage IC-2AT 140-150 MHz
If you have studied the schematic diagram for this radio, you will notice that pins 15 and 16 are not indicated on the programmable divider chip IC1 (TC9122).
By simply connecting pin 15 thru a switch to pin 1, you will be able to move the radio up in frequency by 10 MHZ.
Some of these radios were sold without covering 140-150 MHZ.
The modification for this extended coverage is described below:
Open up the radio and locate the FLEXIBLE BOARD, this connects the thumbwheel switches to the MAIN BOARD.
At the MAIN BOARD end of the FLEXIBLE BOARD, add a jumper at location C4. There should already be a jumper at location C2.
At the thumbwheel switch end of the FLEXIBLE BOARD, remove the jumper which connects C3 and COM.
Reassemble the radio. Coverage is now 140-150 MHZ.(MARS/CAP)
Now, if you activate the switch described above, the radio will now operate in the 150-160 MHZ range, after L3 adjustment, described below.

Thanks for the info. I already had a 2AT the this radio appears to have been made for the 150mhz band as it does not have any repeater shift switches or tone pad like my 2AT. I think this radio came from reserve in a local PD. It does not seem to have much use despite its age.

I didn't know they made a commercial version of that radio. I once had a 220 Mhz IC-3AT until some $%^%*& stole it from my car.
