My new laptop doesn't have a serial port ... NOW what do I d

Post by n9gik »

I have CSF100S software in my desktop computer to program Icom radios. I splurged and bought me a new laptop with XP so I could use it to program mobiles easier, etc. Only problem ... it doesn't have a serial port!

Is there a USB cable to use?
I don't know much about 2-way radios but I'm over 50 and can't remember not having one around. Everything from Buddy and Citi-fone to Icom and Kenwood.

The CSF100S software is Windows based and will run on XP. You will need to order USB OPC-1122 programming cable. It comes with driver software also. They can be ordered on Ebay for $15 to $39 + shipping. This is the cable I use for mine........ There are many sellers on ebay........ Good luck

You can try a PMCIA card with a serial port on it like this:

Don't bother with trying a USB to serial adapter, they suck, none of them work properly for programming radios.

As the previous posted pointed out. The best solution is the factory USB cable if it's available. If you're like me you already have a significant investment in programming cables for different radios. I solved the problem by finding an old cheap laptop with a serial port, that I have dedicated for radios.
