Kenwood portable UHF antenna

Post by dmonty83 »

We are currently in the process of spec-ing some Tk-3180's

This is what I have so far.
TK3180 UHF 5 watt portable
KNB-32 NiMh Battery (2500Mah)
KSC-32 Multi chemistry charger
KMC-25 Kenwood speaker mic

I am torn with antennas...what do you guys think?

KRA-17A UHF stubby
KRA-27 UHF whip
KRA-23 UHF helical stubby (I currently use and don't appear to have many problems)

We use the same antennas on the 3180s that we had been using all along with our 380s (the -17A). They're tough, small, and effective in the local area. As most of the HTs are never more than a mile away from the facility, gain isn't too much a factor for us.

We could have obtained the newer antennas with the 3180s, but it would have been another part I need to stock and track usage on, and I didn't see the point...

I am just trying to figure out what the difference would be in the antennas...

We used the stubby but moved to the kra27 whip. For some reason when you've got a stubby on the radio users just love to handle the radio by it. Until it breaks.

Have you noticed a difference as far as reception/transmitting with the short as opposed to the whip?

Also does anyone know the difference between the helical UHF antenna and the regular stubby antenna???

Thanks

David
