I have a Kenwood mobile, 32 Ch with the orange display. The backlighting is intermittent on it. Is the lighting part of the display or individual bulbs, LEDs or an intregal part of the display? Haven't had it apart yet.

Re: Kenwood Alpha Display Backlite
The radio has surface mount LED's to back light the display, the problem is fairly common. IIRC there are 4 of them, best to replace them all.

So in theory you can change the backlight colors?

Yep, there LEDs, and you can replace them. If you like soldering small parts. These LEDs are part plastic. They melt very easy, to easy. Like someone else said here, you most likely can change colors, just got to get the anode/cathode right of led. Got to be the same. There are actually 2 rows of 3 each of the leds. Usually there is one on each side that goes bad. But, after you replace them, leave the unit apart for roughly, 30 mins. with it on, then you will be able to tell if the other leds will be able to stand up to the job of continuing to work. Sometimes, after replacing just the two leds, some of the others just want to quit working, due to there lazy asses getting tired. He he.
