TK 880 Digital Modulation

TK 880 Digital Modulation
Anyone out there used the Digital Modulation Input? I have tried using that input with the digital data output from a modem at 1200 baud and less with little success-the output of the 880 is not clean. I have tried the same output with other radios that accept digital input and it works well. I just wonder if that digital input is REALLY a digital input?
