Marine radios

Post by 1 ADAM 12 »

For the most part most marine radios cannot do anything outside of their range and also don't have the PL/DPL capabilities, beside which modification is an FCC no-no. But Icom has 3 radios that do commercial and Marine and 2 are programmable for 146-174MHZ stuff with PL etc. The first is the Icom M88, submersible marine portable and is capable of 22 additional channels. The other is the Icom F30LTM an intrinsically safe radio. The last is the ICOM M-11 , but it has a preset limited list in the 154-159 range and cannot do PL / DPL/ The othe radio is the Simrad AXIS series which also can do Marine and commercial.
Vertex Standard makes the 470 series which does Marine, FRS and MURS and offers PL capability in one package. There are some other ones out there that exist and also some commercial radios that are type accepted. Teh Yaseu FTH 2070 comes to mind. Hope that helps

VHF Marine

No problem, and I agree... there are some great radios out there, many are weatherproof, submersible (limited depth and period) but still, plus weather channels and alerts etc. If the radio had a prom or eeprom that could reconfigured for like MURS , 1 hell of a construction, yard work, hunting etc radio. But at least a few companies are starting to do some good things, Uniden and Vertex Standard have been getting more innovative.. and some of the Marine ideas are going to be expanding to MURS, FRS and GMRS radios. The biggest hurdle would be to rewrite the code and to get it into the radio . Most of these are set chips with no allowance for either removal or easy program access
