"DIGV ERR" on LPE-200

Post by the_muddy_mudskipper »

there's an LPE up on ebay right now that seems to work fine other than generating this error when turned on a ProVoice System:

"The feature data shows that the ProVoice feature is enabled but appears nonfunctional, when tested on a ProVoice system the radio shows "DIGV ERR" and does not recieve or transmit in that mode. "

does this error mean anything *specific* is wrong with the Digital Vocoder Board?

bah - nevermind.

looks like another "feature encryped" LPE.

don't have the $300 to pay MA/COM to unlock the ProVoice...

What exactly does this 'another feature encrypted LPE' refer to ? Isnt a feature string in the LPE already in the radio and based on the serial number of the radio ? If the feature codes show up on the screen doesnt that mean the radio is capable and programmed for those features ?

I don't know if this makes sense .. :-?

Thanks

based on my research (and not any hands-on experience) the features you bring up with the MENU on the LPE will show what the radio is capable of...but not guaranteed to do.

my understanding is that the "feature encryption" is in place to allow sites to upgrade say, from Aegis to ProVoice, with either the addition of new hardware (the PV board) or perhaps software (flash, dsp, whatever...)

problem is, seems some radios left the lab/shop with "incomplete" feature additions, or as a "test" unit and you might run into one of those radios, which at worst would mean having to contact MA/COM and activate the features by providing them with the ROM sn, ESN, and some other info (so they can generate the HEX key to be entered in Programmer....)

This is what I found on DIGV ERR in the Orion manual, which is the only place I could find a reference to it...

ERROR Messages
If any of the following error messages are displayed, the radio was either
programmed incorrectly or needs servicing:
DSP ERR
ERR=xxxx
DSP ERR
DIGV ERR

So perhaps it is just a misprogrammed unit?

not if someone's been fooling with it...(the hex string, that is)

it's also my understanding that the feature-encryption unlocking relies on ROM sn, ESN, and possibly another value...can't remember exactly.

nevertheless, i'm always leery of ebay radios that neglect to offer 1) serial number, 2) feature list 3) or where the seller feigns ignorance e.g., "the radio just beeps 2 times when i turn it on - not sure what this means - BID WITH CONFIDENCE!"

with very few exceptions, radios that make it to ebay are radios that have been run through the wringer one too many times and are better off avoiding...in my opinion.

hey Matte, i saw you got a reply on radioreference:

"The radio is programmed wrong. Go into systems, under the general tab select provoice as the vocoder. Also, go to group sets and select unencrypted on all talkgroups. I hope this helps.....mastrtech"

i'm guessing you got the radio - congrats and hope it's a solid performer!

Yeah I got it. I don't know how anyone else missed it. When I scooped the radio with Buy It Now, the bidding was less than $100 away from the Buy It Now price... Plus it came with two extended batteries, a standard battery, antenna, rapid charger, and extension speaker/mic for $445. I checked with the local radio shop here just before buying and they said the DIGV ERR was just a software programming error and they highly doubted it was any hardware issue.

The shop you talked to is not totally correct. If you have a radio that is not feature encrypted for any digital modes (AEGIS / ProVoice/ P-25) and you program it with a personality that has it properly selected, you will get a digital voice error on some older radios and on newer ones DSP Error.
