Opensky Programming question...

Post by Pj »

If you had an Opensky radio and wished to monitor the system, does the radio need to affliate like the SmartZone radio's do, or can it be used passively?

I have some spare cash set aside, and would like to pick up a M802 mobile to rx only.
From the Federal Signal Price Book:
"Warning: Sirens and Speakers may produce LOUD sounds necessary to request the right-of-way."

Really...You think?

No, passive monitoring with OpenSky is not possible. The radios do function like SmartZone in that respect.

chris, do you mean the radios use an ESN? like LTR Passport.

with Passport, if you aren't logged-in and affiliating, you do not receive any site updates, but you CAN still turn off these features and monitor traffic.

i'm assuming the OpenSky system is more like a digital cellphone network where up to 3 identifiers are needed to gain access to the network?

Yes, that is correct. Without all parameters being met for logon, you will not be able to receive anything. You can not clone an ID either as OpenSky is smart enough to know which ID is the correct one and disable the cloned one. Without a valid ID and radio on the system, forget about monitoring. Also as a side note, OpenSky is APCO 25 Phase II compliant.
