VX-180 Question
I have heard mixed views whether or not this radio will do 5/6 tone alerting. I found one on the web but they say it is a European model not available in the U.S. and that U.S models don't support it. Any information would be helpful as I am looking for a UHF Portable that will support 5/6 tone alerting.

The US version of the VX160/VX180 will not support 5 tone format. It's strictly 2 tone reception only and DTMF ANI encode.
If you don't need to use 2-tone and 5-tone at the same time try the VX-420A aka 427-4-5 Version D (450MHz-490MHz).
It allows decoding and encoding of 5-tone formats (up to 32 specific calls).
I don't use the 5-tone format but I've tried playing a little with the software and there are ALL SORTS of features that the radio will do. The radio with a Lithium-Ion Battery, and Rapid Charger should be around $400.
