Proper audio coupling between two FTL Vertex radios
Proper audio coupling between two FTL Vertex radios
Hi All, I have linked two Vertex FTL series radios together and the transmitters are keying both ways ok. (bidirectional simplex) I have used speaker audio for now using the volume controls for controling the levels but Would like some details on the proper way to couple the audio without using the volume controls. I have used earphone audio on Maxtracs and it worked fine but the FTLs dont offer that option in their mic jacks. Any help will be greatly appreciated as I dont care to adjust the volume pots for audio. Thank you all very much. Davie n3chu at atlanticbb dot net
This is from memory and an old very small schematic that I have so bear with me.
You can tap receive audio at J3001 pin 2 on the CPU board, this is the board on the other side of the assembly from the main RF board. J3001 is the 6 pin connector on the CPU board that is fed thru to the RF board, not the one that goes to the control head/faceplate which we aren't using here.
Your board may have a different J number possibly something like J2001 instead of J3001 but either way this is the 6 pin connector going from the RF board to the CPU board, the white half moon etching to the left side of the connectors designates pin 1.
From the top of the connectors with the front of the radio facing you the pin numbers are 1, 2, 3 etc going from left to right.
Transmit audio is on J3005 pin 1 of the CPU board, yours may say J2005 on it but either way this is the 14 pin connector that is also fed thru to the RF board and it is just to the left of the 4 Mhz crystal that's between these 2 connectors.

FTL audio coupling
Thank you Mike for all of your effort, I think I,ve got the pin locations now. I have been using a non-polorized cap to couple the earphone audio on the 5 pin Maxtracs would you think doing that might work for coupling the discriminator audio on the FTL's? Davie n three chu
Here's what I use in a repeater Link radios at a repeater site.....
INFO Vertex FTL-7011 UHF
Ground Braid Ground to right of C2058 / Control Board
PTT Output J2006 – pin 1 Control Unit–Solder side (PTT) - Solder to bypass 330 ohm resistor (if present).
Audio Output J2006 - pin 4 Control Unit–Solder side (TX AF)
Audio Input J2001 - pin 3 Control Board (DET IN) Disc audio
COS J2001 - pin 1 Control Board (SQ SIG) **
** Note: Active High No signal 0 V, with signal 5V.
