TK-690 mods to 6 meters

I have a couple of questions regarding the mods to make the 690 the 6m band.

first, what is the difficulty level? is it something the average ham can do or do you need a lot of expertise?

second, if i take a 42-50 split radio up to 53.995 will i loose the bottom 4 mhz? the reason i ask is i need the commercial side down to about 44.250mhz.

is it possible to make my 690 a 44-54mhz radio and be in spec?
