Could someone shed some light on how to hook up an external speaker to a Kenwood TK730 remote trunk mount radio.

This pertains to the 15 pin accy plug on the dashmount or remote style......

The rear connector should have a jumper in pins 9 & 12 if you have the plain-jane numeric only head because it has an internal speaker. For the full display head without a speaker you connect your external speaker to pins 6 & 12 (make sure it will handle 20w - this mother can get loud!).

OK, so how about the 6 pin plug on the back of the head? What is the pinout of it? Can't an external speaker be hooked to there?

Yes, that is how my remote 730H is set up - but I don't have the pinout for the 6 pin plug. My ignition sense wire & speaker wires are covered with a rubber boot so it is not easy to take a look at it.

My 830 is a dashmount with a full feature head, so the ext speaker is connected to the 15 pin on back as mentioned above.

Need someone with the x30 manual to help us out here......
