TK-3160 Programming Problem

Having trouble adding a new freq to a TK-3160. It keeps saying check the connection. I'm sure the kpg-22 is ok because it works on other radios such as 2160 and 3101.
I'm thinking the guy that programmed it last might have used the wrong software or something. (He died last June)
Any tricks to putting it into program mode or other suggestions??
